What's the difference between a "walk" and a "hike?" Is it terrain? Length? Exertion? Something else?

Well . . . we were hoping the issue of "paved" would come up. We took a jaunt around the base of Devils Tower this morning. Beautiful 1.3 miles. Paved trail. No way you're gettin' a baby stroller through there. Steep sections both up and down.
We're calling that a hike.
